As many of you are aware SMCC had a team entered for the NSEA National Championships at Hickstead at the beginning of the May half term. The team members Molly Matthews, Jessica Cumings, Fraser Boundy and Lily Cronk worked extremely hard to raise all the money themselves to be able to compete at this event. They did this through cake sales, raffles, sponsorship and donations. On top of raising all the funds they needed they also raised a massive £480 for the Devon Air Ambulance and £130 for their pony club. This took a great deal of commitment and organisation on top of preparing and keeping their horses fit ready to compete at this level.
What an amazing experience they all had competing at such a prestigious place. It was a tough competition with very big entries but all our team rode with confidence and style with some really good clear rounds in both their classes. Unfortunately they couldn’t quite get up in the top placings to bring home a placing rosette but it wasn’t for the want of trying and they did get a lovely finalist rosette.
Special thanks go to Lily Cronk who joined the team to make up the 4th member at short notice on her new pony Bobby’s Dream.
Jess Cumings said “I am so proud of all our team and our horses for getting here, it is an experience I will remember for a long time”.
Molly Mathews commented “It was a really great weekend with good friends it was well worth all the hard work and preparation to get our horses here, they all looked so smart and they tried so hard”.
Fraser Boundy said “The team have all been riding together within the Dulverton West pony club since we were little and have learnt how to support each other as a team through the highs and lows, our Hickstead weekend was certainly a high point in our riding experience”.
The team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that supported them by buying cakes and raffle tickets, to South Molton Rotary club for paying for our stabling, Torch Equine Vets for providing us with our lovely warm dry robes, Acorn Saddlery in South Molton for our saddle pads and Mole Valley Farmers in South Molton for supplying all our horses’ food, bedding and rugs for the weekend and for sponsoring the team for the next 12 months.
Thanks to Mrs Hannah Cumings for this article, and a huge thanks to the parents of our gallant show jumping team whose commitment, early mornings, lorry driving and work as unpaid grooms make involvement in this competition possible.
