SMCC at Bath for top flite netball competition.

Grace Sinclair in year 7 is travelling to Cricklands, Wales and West Showground this weekend.  She has qualified to complete at the Championships.  We are really proud of her.

The students attending Riding Club at Collacott Stables are half way through their 6 week programme – and they’ve made so much progress.  The afterschool club has seen them, not only learn how to ride, but also how to care for the horses and ponies.  Students who have never ridden before are now trotting off the lead rein and the students who have a little more experience are perfecting their 20 metre circles, 3 loop serpentines and trotting on the correct diagonal.  The students have also ridden in all the elements so far: Storm Doris with howling winds, lashing rain and beautiful spring sunshine.

The next round of lessons will be advertised soon.

SMCC Show Jumping are training hard for their first competition on the 4th April as part of the North Devon Schools Show Jumping League.  Molly Matthews (pictured below) competed at Pontispool’s Eventer Challenge; Molly went clear in the show jumping but had an unfortunate stop at the water.  Molly was placed 6th Team overall, 1st junior team and 4th junior individual.  Molly has also had several lessons: indoor cross country lesson with Tim Cheffings at Downe Farm and a dressage lesson with Fiona Price-Jones.  Molly also competed at the Axe Vale Pony Club Show jumping competition at Bicton College where she was clear in the 85cm and the 90cm but not fast enough for placings.  Well done, Molly!

Jessica Cumings has been riding for 11 years, she has two ponies Puzzles and Polly (pictured below).  She has been to a number of jumping lessons including indoor cross country with Tim Cheffings.   Jessica is really looking forward to competing as part of the school team this year!

Pupils enjoyed their first session at Collacott Equestrian Centre as part of Riding Club on Thursday 23rd February.  Despite howling winds, all pupils – particularly those who have never ridden before – learnt a great deal.  Group 1 (led by our students in Group 2) experienced rising trot for the first time.  Group 2 (our slightly more experienced riders) were asked some bigger questions and faced different challenges.  Pupils then helped to untack their horses and put them in their stables.

At South Molton Community College we’re aware that horse riding can benefit out pupils in a variety of ways – including: developing balance, improving coordination and motor function.  We can’t wait for next Thursday and to see the progress they make over this next 6 weeks.

South Molton Community College’s Show Jumping Team travelled to Tall Trees Arena in Cornwall on Tuesday 14th February for their first competition.  The girls, Izzy Beard, Maisie Atkinson, Molly Matthews and Grace Sinclair, looked professional and smart in their team colours – provided by Acorn Saddlery.  Izzy and Maisie both jumped brilliantly in the 80cm but had an unfortunate 4 faults each; Grace jumped clear and then had 4 faults in the jump-off and Molly jumped double clear.  The team came 4th in the 80cm.  Their second class, 90cm, was up to height.  Izzy and Maisie jumped bravely and with gusto – picking up 4 faults each.  Grace jumped clear and then got 4 faults in the jump-off; her pony had an unfortunate stumble on a tight turn – she would have had the fastest time of the class!  Molly jumped another double clear – riding elegantly and competently.  The team picked up 4th place again.

All four girls rode beautifully and with proficiency.  Well done girls!  We’re really proud of you and can’t wait for the next competition.

Cohen Phillips and Ollie Cheek with Mr Finney

Ollie Cheek (right of the photo)and Cohen Phillips (left of the photo) have achieved the Excellent Achievement in Sport award for this half term.

Ollie has been scoring a lot of goals for the Yr10 Football team which has helped fire the team in to the National Semi-Final of the English Schools Cup.

Cohen came 2nd in the North Devon Cross-Country event, which meant he was selected for the North Devon team. Cohen represented North Devon at the county wide competition and came 2nd in that event. This qualified him for selection for the Devon County Cross Country Team.

A huge well done to both young men!

Congratulations to year 7 student Cohen Phillips who has qualified for the Devon Schools Cross country team, Minor Boys Group.  Well done Cohen!
