Commanders Certificate for ‘outstanding Service to the Community and Innovation’

SMCC have been awarded the ‘Commanders Certificate’ for ‘outstanding Service to the Community and Innovation’ , it was awarded to SMCC’s Mrs Southworth and Detective Sergeant Neil Young and Detective Constable John Crewe for work carried out within The Bridge@SMCC.

We put together a 6 week program, covering a wide range of topics including: drugs, legal highs, alcohol misuse, staying safe online, peer pressure and consent.

This has led to an excellent working relationship between The Bridge@SMCC and Barnstaple CID and the development of a pioneering educational program which will be run again in The Bridge@SMCC and rolled out to other secondary schools across North Devon in the future.

SMCC Ten Tors success

Last weekend 18 students from South Molton Community College competed in “the challenge of a lifetime” the Ten Tors Challenge.
On Friday the teams had a day of safety briefings, route planning and kit checks to ensure they were ready for the start of the challenge at 7am Saturday morning.  Two of our teams NN and NP walked 35 mile routes and one team WM walked 45 miles.
The students have been training for the challenge over the winter, with walks and camping in every weather condition Dartmoor could throw at them. They have learnt to work together as a team, to be able to navigate around the moor and look after each other for the whole weekend with no adult intervention.
All 3 teams completed the challenge with all their team members.  One student even wanted to start again, but his team mates weren’t so keen!
