SMCC Show Jumping Team lead the South Molton Carnival

SMCC Show Jumping Team proudly led the South Molton Carnival on Saturday 23rd September and then travelled to Bicton Arena the following day to compete at Blundell’s One Day Event. The team (Lily Cronk, Molly Matthews, Jess Cumings and Chloe Sanders) rode with determination to win 5th place in the 70cm. Grace Sinclair also came 5th in the individual 80cm class. Josh Flanagan also competed as an individual, riding an incredible dressage test to get a 20.8 score but was out of placings. The team, who are sponsored by Acorn Saddlery, turned their ponies out beautifully and were, yet again, a credit to their school.

Well done SMCC Show Jumpers!

As its a Friday we thought you might appreciate a picture of an old SMCC rugby shirt being used to help a lamb with blowfly strike.

Exam Bus

South Molton Community College would like to thank Kim Chivers for driving our Exam Bus. The bus allows Year 11 students that are transported to school the opportunity to attend extra-curricular revision sessions leading up to their GCSE Exams. We are so pleased that Kim will be offering her time again next year to help give our students every opportunity of achieving their full potential.

Record breaking GCSE results for our class of 2017

Congratulations to the class of 2017 who achieved the schools highest ever pass rate for five or more GCSE passes at grade C or above including English and maths – well done to all students, parents, governors and teachers.

Top GCSE Results

Staff, pupils, parents and governors celebrated another successful year of results at South Molton Community College. Over 66% of students achieved a pass at grade 4 or above for the new English and maths GCSE exams with 50% achieving a grade 5 and above. Over 11% of students achieved the new grades 9-7 at both English and maths (Grade 7 represents the legacy grade A result).

Principal Andrew Finney said he was delighted with the results during both a turbulent year with the new GCSE exams and of course moving into the new £11 million pound building last year, “Once again our community has worked tirelessly to improve the life chances for our children and like last year our results are testament to this. Our students started at SMCC below the national average for key stage two results and again we expect them to be above the national average when they leave. In 2016 the national pass rate for grade C and above for English and maths was 62%, we achieved 71%, I would expect the same general national pass rate and again we are above it”.

Show Jumping Team – North Devon Schools League winners

SMCC Show Jumping Team pulled out all the stops on Friday 1st September in the North Devon Schools Show Jumping League to win the 80cm (we had two teams entered in the 80cm and actually came first and second!) and the 90 cm class. The students, as always, rode with style and finesse – not letting the championship nerves effect their performance. The students also won third place in the individual 60cm class and second and fourth in the 70cm class. All SMCC riders demonstrate impeccable sportsmanship and support and encourage the riders from other schools as well as their team mates.
Every student deserves a mention for their brilliance: Josh Flanagan, Lily Cronk, Fraser Boundy, Jess Cumings,  Chloe Sanders, Maisie Atkinson, Grace Sinclair, Izzy Beard, Molly Matthews. Additional congratulations to Grace, who won the second best overall rider of the entire league.
The winter league starts in October; if you’d like to be involved please contact Mrs Sherwood.

Amigos Uganda Fundraising

Even closer to the fundraising total! Harriet and Emily would like to thank all the very generous sponsors who donated prizes and the amazing supporters who joined them at Bishops Nympton Community Hall for a BINGO evening! Refreshments, games and a cake auction added to the amount raised. A fantastic total of £920! Look out for a late summer cream tea in Umberleigh which is their next venture.

Emily and Harriet added to their Amigos Uganda fund! £100 of teas and coffees sold at the Mini Rally in Westward Ho! Thanks to Mark the manager of the COOP there, for his support! Emily also sold £50 of her photograph canvases & cards, she also has a commission from a gift shop there too! Well done girls! Keep coming up with good ideas.

Emily and Harriet carried out litter picking on Westward Ho beach on Sunday 23rd July.  12 bags were collected, good for the environment and £100 was raised in sponsorship for their upcoming trip to Uganda.
