“English is vital for communicating with others in school and in the wider world, and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects. In studying English, pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing that they will need to participate in society and employment. Pupils learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others confidently and effectively.” National Curriculum

Our aim is to develop an understanding of and love for the English language and Literature. We aim to develop the communication skills of all our pupils, both oral and written so they can express their views coherently and participate fully in the school and the wider community, and go on to become active and confident citizens. The department recognises the values of English as a fundamental life skill, the basis for the study of other subjects and for effective communication. We wish to promote a love of novels, poetry and drama and sensitivity, appreciation and purposeful usage of language.

At SMCC English is taught by an experienced and enthusiastic team. We offer a varied and challenging curriculum at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and we work hard to enthuse and engage pupils by using a range of teaching approaches and the latest technology.

KS3
All pupils follow the Accelerated Reader challenge to improve their reading skills.  This is closely monitored and rewards are presented every term to celebrate reading achievements.  In class, pupils will read and analyse a variety of text types and these will often provide the basis for a piece of writing.  Pupils will develop their skills in writing for a range of different purposes and audiences.

KS4
All pupils study two separate GCSEs at Key Stage 4: English Language and English Literature.
Our current examination boards are:
AQA GCSE English Language 8700
AQA GCSE English Literature 8702

Every year we shadow the Carnegie award for children’s literature and many pupils are keen to take on this challenge.
Pupils also have opportunities to meet and work with visiting authors.
