DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

               Examination Board: WJEC
Qualification Title: GCSE Design Technology: Product Design
Design and Technology makes a massive impact on students’ learning.

They need to take information they learn from other subjects, especially
maths and science, and apply it using logic, the power of analysis and
creativity - It’s a real cross-curricular subject! It teaches how to take risks
and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.

Students develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and
technology on daily life and the wider world. Students learn what a radius
and diameter are in maths and then use that knowledge practically in DT.

It’s the natural subject to study at GCSE before going on to an engineering
               or design degree.

The subject shows your ability to develop ideas, evaluate your work and be
creative. Design Technology is an optional subject.

The Design & Technology course offers you the opportunity to continue
to develop practical skills alongside a wide-ranging study of the world of
design, manufacturing, materials, new technological developments and the
impact of design on our world.

At SMCC we study WJEC Design Technology: Product Design.
You are assessed in your knowledge of technologies, materials and
               evaluating work:

               • Designing a prototype of a product in line with a specific brief,
experiencing a range of materials and processes.
               • Designing and making a customer focused product using a range of
                   materials, exploring CAD/CAM.
               • Designing and making a storage devise, developing skills of wood joints,
manufacturing processes and developing understanding of ergonomic
                   design.

This is currently assessed through two exams (50% at the end of Year 11
and complete a non-examined assessment portfolio of work (50%).
