SMCC The Science IIII DocumentAt Ks3, a high-quality science education helps to underpin our students' understanding of the world through the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics. Science has changed our lives, especially since the pandemic and it is essential to our future prosperity. All students are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Students gain an understanding of the key knowledge and concepts and are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation as they develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the natural world. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is happening around them, to predict how things will behave, and to analyse causes. We aim to focus on meaningful practical work and in normal times we aim to offer plenty of extracurricular experiences through trips and workshops.

At Ks4, students continue to develop their knowledge and understanding through biology, chemistry, and physics. They develop their understanding of the nature and processes of science through a scientific enquiry approach that helps them to understand the world around them. Our students gain the knowledge and skills needed to understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future. Students develop the ability to describe science in both common language and in their developing technical vocabularies. They use their mathematical skills in collecting, presenting, and analysing data. We consider the social and economic implications of science and present science so that students can relate it to their everyday lives. Students also learn about the importance of science in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food production and access to clean water. We send a good number of our students on to post-16 study in the sciences and they are well-prepared and confident. Our students go on to diverse and rewarding careers that are essential to our economic, environmental, and social development.
