‘An equal start in life’

The Pupil Premium was introduced in 2011 by the Coalition Government. The Pupil Premium fund is targeted at supporting students on Free School Meals, those who are in Care and those who are from Armed Forces families. It is a way of helping schools to ensure all pupils gets an equal start in life and that they go on to follow that suits both their interests and ability.

Schools and Academies are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. New measures will be included in the performance tables that will capture the achievement of those deprived pupils covered by the Pupil Premium.
