Welcome to the English Department

In English lessons we cover the content of both English Language & Literature, preparing students for two separate GCSEs (both with AQA).

Our aim is to enable all students to be independent, critical, literate and curious members of society who are prepared for life beyond school. We seek to expose students to a wide variety of enriching fiction and non-fiction texts to help them foster a better understanding of the interesting, challenging and diverse world in which they live.

In English lessons, students develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. They learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate confidently: vital skills that everyone needs to participate effectively and critically in the wider world.

At SMCC, English is taught by an experienced and enthusiastic team. We offer a varied and challenging curriculum at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, and we work hard to inspire and engage students by using a range of teaching approaches.

We view our role as crucial in preparing for students’ next steps, allowing them to achieve the grades to which they aspire and pursue their dreams.
