Art helps to develop the imagination, communication and a way of interpreting the world around us. Pupil's understanding and enjoyment of art, craft and design is developed through a range of activities which bring together elements of investigating & making and knowledge & understanding. Each scheme of work endeavours to encompass a variety of different skills, based within a particular topic or art movement. Art also helps to meet SMCC's aims by developing lively, enquiring and creative minds.

 All students have a right to learn about art, craft and design. The art rooms are a safe, welcoming and inspiring environment in which students are encouraged and helped to their full potential.

KS3 Art and Technology share a rotation system in which students in years 7, 8 and 9 study art in two terms out of three. The duration of the lessons in Key Stage 3 is one hour and forty minutes (i.e. two fifty minute lessons). All students are required to purchase an A4 hardback sketchbook from the Art Department at a cost of £3.85. Sketchbooks are primarily used for homework or to support project work, students may use then for personal drawing as long as it is of a suitable nature. Students are encouraged to keep their sketchbook clean and tidy.

Projects are designed to combine all five key components (which are listed below), so that students will receive the maximum education experience possible. Art & Design education can be sub-divided into five key components and there is no particular order in which they are addressed or studied. Each term's project addresses many sections within the five components and thus allows good coverage of the National Curriculum.

The five components are:

Procedures Assessment Visual Elements Critical & contextual Practices

Observing, expressing, experimenting and making. Planning, evaluating, recording, assessing and reporting. Line, colour, texture, tone, form, space, shape and pattern. Western and Non-Western art, art across time, own art and others. Painting, drawing, designing, printing, collage, sculpture, craft, textiles, ICT.
